The Incredible Shrinking Justin

I thought since I was a week in I would update those who were interested in my progress on the HCG diet that I am on with the help of New Creations Medical Weight Loss Clinic.

After one week I am down 11 pounds from 207 to 196.

For those of you who are not familiar with the concept of an HCG diet I encourage you to do your own research.  The way it was explained to me is you take a prescription dose of HCG each day for 23 days while on a very restricted diet (restricted to 500 calories a day and very specific things that can and can't be eaten) under the direction of a doctor.  The HCG is supposed to help with hunger cravings and force your body to feed off of stored fat (I have plenty) instead of muscle during this the most challenging phase.  So far so good on the hunger.  After about day three, it wasn't really a problem.  I can't speak to the muscle loss facet, but I can say I have not lost any strength and do not see any visible muscle shrinkage as yet.  The plan is also designed after the entire nine weeks or so, to reset your metabolism and help you KEEP WEIGHT OFF which is the real issue with a lot of diets.  I will have to get back to you on that.  After the 23 days, you go to a 1500 calorie diet that is restricted as far as content and then after that you have to make good nutrition choices to maintain your weight.  Maintaining has never been an issue for me as I lead a pretty healthy lifestyle.  Getting the initial weight off has been very difficult in the past for me however and this is proving to be the advantage I needed.

The only negative about the initial part of the plan is that you don't have a lot of energy to do anything really physical.  I was able to manage four workouts last week that were not really intensive, but were serviceable.

I wanted to do this because the science of the diet makes sense to me and I wanted to see if I could be disciplined enough to stick to the regimen.  Not to mention the idea of losing a lot quickly was intriguing.  We all talk about how we are "going to lose 20 by my wedding" or "lose 25 before the reunion".  In most cases I would have to say "no, you are not."  I have been that guy.  Good plan.  Good intentions.  No follow through or ability to stick to it and get it done and accomplish a weight goal.  I am now clearly on a path that is going to have me at a weight I have not seen since I was in my early college days over 20 years ago.  It will also put me far enough below 200 that I will never break that threshold again.  For me, that is reason enough.  This is life CHANGING for me.  For those who deal with obesity, diabetes and other weight related issues, this can be life SAVING.  That is me talking, not the folks who administer the diet.

I am getting a lot of "you can't live on 500 calories a day" and "of course you're losing weight, you aren't eating anything."  That is an oversimplification and lack of understanding of this plan in my opinion.  I am surprised by how many doubters out there of this plan there are when anyone can clearly see it is working for me and even more so for my buddy Roger Scott.  I do want to thank my wife, Roger and my co-host and pal Pat Bradley for their support.  It has been so crucial for me.  I am an vowed foodie and love to cook, eat and entertain friends and family members with meals.  It is a HUGE part of my life and so it is kind of sad having to give that up even for just a few weeks.  When I go to the 1500 calorie maintenance the first week of May, I plan to be at 185 or less.  I will update you soon on my progress.  If you are interested in the plan-you can contact the New Creations Medical Weight Loss Clinic at 501-791-6795 or at
