FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – University of Arkansas running back/kick returner Dennis Johnson and defensive end Jake Bequette were recognized as SEC players of the week, it was announced Monday.
Johnson was named SEC Special Teams Player of the Week and Bequette was tabbed as the conference’s co-Defensive Lineman of the Week following Arkansas’ 44-28 win over No. 10 South Carolina.
Johnson piled up a season-high 252 all-purpose yards against the Gamecocks. The junior from Texarkana, Ark., earned 130 of those yards on two kickoff returns, including a 98-yard touchdown that was his first of the season and third of his career. The score, which is the longest of his career and tied for the 10th-longest kickoff return touchdown in school history, put the Razorbacks ahead 10-7 after South Carolina had taken a 7-3 lead late in the first quarter.
Bequette tied a career high with 3.0 sacks against the Gamecocks. His sack total ranks as the third-highest single-game output in the SEC and tied for the ninth highest in the NCAA this season. The senior from Little Rock, Ark., made a total of four tackles, forced one fumble and had one quarterback hurry. Bequette’s forced fumble occurred on a fourth-quarter sack that gave the Razorbacks the ball at the South Carolina 1-yard line and led to the final points of the night. The Arkansas defense held South Carolina, which entered the game averaging 202 rushing yards per game, to 207 yards of total offense and just 79 on the ground.
With his selection, Johnson becomes the first Razorback to win SEC Special Teams Player of the Week honors three times in a career. It is Johnson’s second SEC player of the week recognition this season after he earned an SEC Offensive Player of the Week acknowledgement following the Ole Miss game and the fifth of his career, which ties him with Darren McFadden for the most in school history. Bequette earned SEC weekly honors for the first time in his career.
Arkansas has had 10 SEC player of the week selections in 2011, the second-highest single-season total in school history. This is the third consecutive week a Razorback has won a weekly conference honor and second straight week with two weekly recognitions. The only week since September Arkansas has not had at least one SEC player of the week was Oct. 15 when the Razorbacks were on a bye.
No. 8 Arkansas continues its three-game home stretch this week by hosting Tennessee inside Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium. Kickoff for the game is set for 5 p.m. on ESPN2. A limited number of tickets are still available for the final on-campus game this season and can be purchased by calling the Razorback Ticket Center at 800-982-HOGS or online at ArkansasRazorbacks.com.
