Arkansas Tennis set for #8 Texas Friday

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - The University of Arkansas men's tennis team will play former Southwest Conference rival, No. 8-ranked Texas Longhorns Friday at the Dills Indoor Tennis Center with the first serve scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
"We are excited to host Texas this weekend," head coach Robert Cox said. "It has been five years since we defeated the Longhorns. They are a great team that is well coached and we hope to continue playing them. We have kept this rivalry going over the past 17 years, since we entered the SEC. It is a bit of a David and Goliath story but I feel good about our chances."
Entering the eighth consecutive year, Arkansas and Texas will matchup again in an ongoing rivalry built upon tradition and respect. Texas won last season’s match 5-2 and leads the series over Arkansas. The Razorbacks last win over the Longhorns was in 2004, with a 4-3 triumph. The Hogs are coming off a tough battle against the Washington Huskies Sunday.
“We had a great opening match against Washington,” Cox said. “Unfortunately, we lost but we gained confidence and proved to ourselves that we can compete with any top 20 team. We just have to carry over the intensity we have in doubles into our singles matches.”
In the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) preseason singles rankings, Arkansas junior Chris Nott sits at No. 81. Four Texas players are ranked in the top 100: No. 5 Dimitar Kutrovsky, No. 9 Ed Corrie, No. 38 Josh Zavala and No. 85 Daniel Whitehead. In the doubles rankings, the Longhorns duo of Kutrovsky and Zavala were ranked No. 22 in the nation.
“Playing Texas is always a fan favorite and we always have the Dill Indoor Stadium filled,” Cox said. “ It will be a great match against a top 10 team.”
The first 500 fans will receive a tennis Hog headband and free pizza will be available to fans. For live scoring during the match and complete results log on to: ArkansasRazorbacks.com.
