NEW YORK – The University of Arkansas football team has been ranked 17th in The Associated Press preseason poll, it was announced Saturday. The ranking is the highest preseason ranking for the Razorbacks since 1990, when UA began the year at No. 14.

The Razorbacks finished the 2009 season with an 8-5 record, including a 20-17 overtime victory over East Carolina in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl. The win was the first Arkansas bowl victory since 2003.

Arkansas returns players who accounted for 100 percent of its passing yards in 2010, 85 percent of its receiving and 75 percent of its rushing yards. The Razorbacks’ lauded offense is led at quarterback by preseason first-team All-SEC honoree Ryan Mallett. UA tight end D.J. Williams joined Mallett on the first team.

UA begins the 2010 season at home in Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium against Tennessee Tech, Sept. 4 at 6 p.m.
