FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – University of Arkansas safety/linebacker Jerico Nelson was named SEC Defensive Player of the Week on Monday.
Nelson led the Razorbacks with 11 tackles, seven of which were solo, in UA’s 31-23 defeat of sixth-ranked LSU last Saturday in War Memorial Stadium. The junior from Destrehan, La., also tallied two tackles for a loss, including one sack, on the Tigers’ first two offensive snaps of the game.
Arkansas held LSU, which entered the game averaging 336.1 yards of total offense per game, to 294 yards, including a season-low 100 yards rushing, and just 71 total yards in the second half. UA also held the Tigers to just 4-of-16 on third-down conversions, including 1-of-7 in the second half.
Nelson is the third Razorback to earn the conference’s defensive player of the week nod this season and second in a row. Before this season, Arkansas had not had an SEC Defensive Player of the Week since Nov. 22, 2006.
The eighth-ranked Razorbacks, who won 10 games in the regular season for the eighth time in school history and finished with six SEC wins for just the fourth time, now await their bowl destination. The announcement will come Sunday.
